About Us
Musical Director - Mayuka Juber
Mayuka Juber started her musical education learning piano and then classical guitar, but it was the clarinet that became the obsessive focus of her teenage years. After completing a sound classical music education at Churchlands Senior High School, she went on to complete a Bachelor of Music (Jazz) at WAAPA.
It was later on whilst studying education at UWA that Mayuka discovered she loved "waving a stick" and all the joys that accompany making music with concert bands.
In her quest to further her conducting abilities she participated in many conducting courses over the years, including mentorship from Christopher Seaman and conducting the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra as part of the Symphony Services International program.
In the past twenty years, Mayuka has mostly worked for the Department of Education and is a Senior Teacher, specialising in classroom music, conducting and woodwind (with Instrumental Music School Services). She has played in and conducted jazz bands, choirs, concert bands, mixed ensembles in the community and high schools. She was Music Director of Combined Districts Concert Band for four years, preparing them for many community performances, themed concerts and State and National Band Championships.
Music is Mayuka's profession and hobby - she can be seen at festivals and events performing on clarinet and saxophone, and in her spare time she can be found lurking in a store cupboard looking for an instrument that she has yet to play.
History
The Claremont Concert Band can trace its history back more than 40 years.
It began in 1975 as a Symphonic Wind Band within The Nedlands Music Development Association, formed on 16 July that year.
In following years the Association added a Youth Band, Junior Percussion, Recorder Orchestra, Training Orchestra, Sinfonietta, guitar groups and choirs.
In 1981 the Melville Symphony Orchestra moved to Nedlands and became the Nedlands Symphony Orchestra.
The successors of that important music-making era are the Claremont Concert Band and the Fremantle Symphony Orchestra, both based at the John Leckie Pavilion.
The band still retains some of its earliest members, who form the core of an ensemble that continues to nurture the talents of the many young players who pass through its ranks.
